By the first week of August, the Tower Green has already hosted its biggest night of the year. Gathering on the Green cleared out in late June, the July Wednesdays wrapped with Triangle Park on the 22nd, and the folding chairs are back in garages. What is left is quieter, and in some ways better: the last stretch of a French Market that has been running since May, a Theatre of Western Springs schedule that swings from a Saturday children's classic to a late-August comedy night, and a Burlington Avenue storefront that will look entirely different by Halloween.
If you live here, this is the month to actually use downtown. The tourist-adjacent crowd has thinned, the weather is still holding, and three of the village's most-loved institutions are running on overlapping calendars.
The four Wednesdays that carry the month
The Bensidoun French Market is the anchor. Starting May 6, the Bensidoun French Market runs each Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm, marked by the brightly colored canopies on Hillgrove Avenue in front of the Tower Green. The Western Springs stand runs Wednesdays through August 26, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. That gives you four dates left, and the produce side of the market is at its late-summer peak precisely as the calendar starts to feel like fall.

The outdoor market is hosted by Bensidoun USA and is styled after the outdoor markets of France, offering fresh produce, meat, eggs, specialty foods like coffee and olive oil, flowers, jewelry, handcrafted items, baked goods, and live music from local buskers. Vendors change throughout the season, so visitors will find different items each week. The practical implication for a resident: the last two Wednesdays are the ones to plan around. Corn, tomatoes, and stone fruit peak in mid-to-late August in Illinois, and once the canopies come down after the 26th, the next outdoor produce moment downtown is a full nine months away.
What the Theatre is running while you are already downtown
The Theatre of Western Springs has structured August as three very different events under one roof, which is unusual for a community theatre calendar and worth mapping out.
Charlotte's Web plays Saturday, August 1st at 12 pm and 2:30 pm. The Directors' Workshop presents its New Plays Workshop August 20 through 23 at Cattell. Bad Momz of Comedy is Friday, August 28th at 8:00 pm. That is a family matinee, a four-night workshop of new writing, and a stand-up night, all inside the same block on Hampton Avenue. If you have kids in the 4-to-10 range, the August 1 Charlotte's Web matinees are the last children's programming before the school year swallows Saturdays.
The Directors' Workshop is the one worth flagging for adults who have lived here for years and still think of TWS as strictly community musicals. New plays workshops are how regional theatre feeds itself, and the August 20–23 run is a chance to see material before it exists anywhere else.
Burlington Avenue is mid-turnover
Here is the piece of local information that will matter most six months from now, and that most residents have not caught yet. The Burlington storefront that housed Salerno's Pizzeria is about to become something quite different.
An Italian restaurant is set to open this fall in Western Springs in a spot that went vacant earlier this year. Alano Ristorante is planned for the space at 821 Burlington Ave., where Salerno's Pizzeria closed in early January. Owner Chris Elsey said he hopes to open the restaurant in late October. Elsey owns the Hillgrove Tap locations in Western Springs and Tinley Park, and he was formerly the managing partner of Francesca's restaurants, a chain with locations in Elmhurst, Naperville and other suburbs.
That last detail is the useful one. Hillgrove Tap has been the family-and-a-pint anchor of the downtown for years, and the same operator taking on a second, more formal Italian concept two blocks away tells you something about how he reads demand here. In his liquor license application, Elsey described Alano as an "elegant Italian restaurant," with an estimated price per person of $30 to $45 based on alcoholic beverages. The restaurant will offer appetizers, salads, pastas, pizza, fish, chicken and steaks, and the bar menu will include specialized spirits, classic cocktails, wine and beer.
Set that against the two other Italian-leaning turnovers already in motion downtown, and August starts to look like the last quiet stretch before a very different fall on the restaurant map:
- Alano Ristorante at 821 Burlington, opening in the former Salerno's space, late October target.
- Ella's Italian Pub at 4471 Lawn Avenue, opening in the space Vie Restaurant occupied for 19 years before closing. Ella's is part of a larger group that includes Ella's Italian Pub and Gia Mia restaurants in Elmhurst, Downers Grove, Wheaton, Geneva and Naperville.
- Petite Vie, Chef Paul Virant's French room, is the counterweight. Nestled in downtown Western Springs, Petite Vie offers a menu of classic French dishes infused with Chef Paul Virant's signature flair, with the chef spending time researching in France for inspiration, seating 65 guests in an intimate space that exudes the warmth of a traditional French brasserie.

The low-effort weekend map
Not every August weekend needs a plan. A few reliable, walkable stops are open on the exact schedules a resident actually cares about:
- Water Tower Children's Museum. The Western Springs Water Tower Museum offers free admission on Saturdays. A rainy August Saturday morning is the correct time to remember this.
- Spring Rock Park. A top choice with its extensive playgrounds and sports fields. Bring cleats after 6 pm when the fields cool.
- The Opry. The main spot for intimate live music, with its Nashville-inspired listening room. A useful move for August 28 if the Bad Momz show sells out.
- BBs Donuts, 4472 Lawn Avenue. The village has been using it as an informal meeting spot; Village First Responders held a coffee, donuts, and conversation event there on Thursday, June 25, from 9 to 11 am, which tells you how the space functions on a normal weekday morning.
- Davanti Enoteca and Hillgrove Tap remain the two default weeknight rooms on Burlington, and Hillgrove Tap is worth revisiting now, before its owner's attention shifts to the Alano build-out down the block.
One routine worth trying before Labor Day
The Wednesday walk from the Tower Green to Burlington Avenue is the single most efficient use of a summer evening downtown. Park once near Hillgrove and Lawn. Do the French Market between 4:30 and 6, when produce vendors have restocked from the lunch pull and the buskers are set up. Walk two blocks south to Burlington for an early dinner. Loop back through Grand Avenue if the light is still holding.
Do it on August 26 and you will have caught the last canopy day of the year on the Tower Green, three weeks before Labor Day resets everyone's schedule.
The point of a village this walkable is that its calendar rewards residents who actually read it.
